Kh. a-Tuba, Masafer Yatta: Israeli settlers attack American activist escorting a Palestinian shepherd with an iron rod, fracturing her skull

On Tuesday, 7 March 2023, at around 9:00 A.M., settlers grazed a flock of sheep northwest of the community of Kh. a-Tuba, and left about two hours later. At around 1:00 P.M., when two international activists escorted a Palestinian shepherd in the same area, the settlers returned and chased them. One of the settlers, whose face was covered, attacked Cassandra Dixon (64), an American activist, hitting her on the head with an iron rod before she could escape. The settler fled after she fell to the ground. Local residents helped Dixon get to the government hospital in the town of Yatta, accompanied by the other activist. At around 2:30 P.M., Dixon was transferred to al-Mezan Hospital in Hebron, where she was diagnosed with a fractured skull and a minor brain hemorrhage. She was discharged the next day and filed a complaint with the police in Hebron a few days later.

This is what Dixon told B’Tselem field researcher Nasser Nawaj’ah:

At around 1:00 P.M., another activist and I went towards the village of a-Tuba, and suddenly two settlers chased us. The other activist managed to run away, but then one of the settlers, who was masked and holding an iron rod, approached me, and suddenly I felt a strong blow to my head, and I passed out. When I came to, I couldn’t see clearly what was happening around me. I had blood on my face. I sat on the ground for a few minutes, and then some local residents came and helped me get to the a-Tuba clinic, and later they transferred me to al-Mezan Hospital in Hebron. I had an x-ray, and it turned out that I had a fractured skull and a minor brain hemorrhage, nothing life-threatening. I was discharged the next day, and several days later, I went to the American Consulate and also filed a complaint with the Hebron police.
