Huwarah, Nablus District: A settlement guard and soldiers that residents recognize as settlers attacked harvesters and stole some 15 kg of olives and other equipment

On Wednesday, 2 October 2024, at around 8:00 A.M., Jamil 'Odeh (44) and his wife, Iman Dweikat-'Odeh (34), went with their 6-month-old baby, Duha, to their olive grove. The grove spans about three dunams (0.3 hectares) on the western side of the town of Huwarah, and has about 60 olive trees. After the couple had harvested about 15 kg of olives, a pickup truck arrived with five soldiers whom they know as settlers, along with a settlement guard they know. One of the soldiers asked the family in Arabic what they were doing there. When they replied that they were on their land, the settlement guard ordered Jamil 'Odeh to sit on the ground.

'Odeh initially refused, but was forced to comply when the settlement guard aimed his weapon at him. The guard slapped 'Odeh, and when the latter tried to stand up, the guard pointed his weapon at him again and ordered him to sit down. 'Odeh refused and a verbal altercation ensued between the two men. Then, the guard hit 'Odeh with brass knuckles, shouted at him and dragged him toward the truck.

The guard let 'Odeh go only after the latter told him he was a U.S. citizen. He warned ‘Odeh not to come back to the area and threatened to shoot him if he did. The soldiers stole the olives the couple had managed to harvest, along with the tarps they used, and left about ten minutes after arriving.

The family immediately left the grove and, as of 1 December 2024, has not returned for fear of further attacks.
